Programs Description:

Newcomer Settlement Program

The Newcomer Settlement Program provides direct settlement services to newcomers in the areas of assessment, referrals, information and orientation. It also provides general settlement assistance services including supportive counseling, documentation, interpretations and translation. The program also provides services that facilitate finding employment, volunteer participation and public education for newcomers.

Job Search Workshops:

This is a program for newcomers and immigrants who are looking for jobs but have difficulties in finding employment. Three-day job search training session is held every month to equip newcomers with job search skills and information relevant to the Canadian labor market. Some topics covered include job search training, labor market preparation, researching prospective employers, interview and job maintenance skills overview of Canadian labor market, skills training information, credentials assessment and prior learning assessment services etc. In addition, we provide access to a state of the art computer with access to the Internet for use by workshop participants. Employment, training and other relevant resources are also readily available in our office.

Women’s Health Program:

Provides public education, supportive counseling and referrals in women health issues including sexual health, pregnancy, parenting, birth control, family planning, domestic violence, youth/parent relationships, social skills development, self esteem and confidence building.

Young African Achievers Club:

This is a summer youth club for young achievers between ages 8-14. Achievers are involved in summer recreational activities including arts and crafts, sports, field trips and more.

Women’s Support Program:

A drop-in program that provides an opportunity for women to come, meet and share experiences with other women in their community in a supportive and non-threatening environment. Group discussions on various issues affecting women as well as recreational activities are held.

Youth Development Programs:

These programs are aimed at developing leadership qualities in youth by motivating them to stay in school and to be productive members of society. The programs are designed to build their self-esteem and self-confidence, encourage them to develop positive self-images and to adopt pro-social behaviours. The program has mentoring, drop-in, youth employment and recreational components.

Parent/Child Drop-in Program:

This is a support group program that provides an opportunity for to meet and share their parenting experiences with other women. Group discussions are on issues such as teen-age parenting, nutrition, budgeting, healthy sexuality, birth control and family planning, domestic violence, wife abuse etc. Referrals to local community resources are made where necessary.

Senior’s Support Group:

This is a drop-in program for seniors from the community aimed at minimizing loneliness and isolation of seniors as well as providing them with information and referrals on issues that affect them. Seniors are involved in recreational activities, field trips, group discussions and games.

Computer Basic Training:

Introduces and orients newcomers to computers in a non-threatening environment by teaching them basic computer skills on a one-on-one basis. The program is aimed at preparing clients for more structured computer training programs and to meet computer literacy needs at various levels in the community.
