FOODPATH

Foodpath, Mississauga's largest foodbank a registered charity, (#0732545-09-13), services 5,000 people monthly after proper registration has occurred. A five day food supplement is provided every four weeks. We rely on donations of monies, supplies and food from private donors, corporations, churches, and service clubs from within the Mississauga community.

Foodpath is more than a foodbank and to this end several outreach programs operate under our direction.
They are as follows:

  • Breakfast programs: provide, 2,000 hot meals monthly to schoolage children. Feedback from local schools provides proof positive of its benefits. Food supplements are also provided to accredited programs for the "Breakfast for Kids" program.

  • Healthy Start: a prenatal and nutritional program for pregnant women aims to prevent low birth weight babies. Every day a baby stays in hospital costs the taxpayer $1500. Four programs now operate in Mississauga.

  • Work programs: for the physically and mentally challenged allow upwards of twenty young adults to prove job and social skills.

  • Young Offenders: supervision and direction provided as mandated by our courts in conjunction with Elizabeth Fry and accredited parole officers.

In the 1996 year we expanded our endeavors and began supplying Interim Place I and 2, two abuse shelters in Mississauga with weekly food orders.
This is to help them to maintain their excellent programs with the budget constraints brought down, by the Provincial governments. We are also able to provide household startup packages containing both food and household supplies to each family as they leave the shelters. If there is a need for dishes and furniture these an also available on referral.

As foodbanks have evolved we have become more professional and in response to society's demands delivery of services has become more strategic providing credibility for both clients and donors. With this evolution has come, the need for new food, monies, and supplies sourcing. We look to private sector for this. By both private and public enterprises working together we cm compliment each other and help to keep our community strong.

This information packet is available for your perusal, Our 1996/1997 operating expense budget was $148,614. In actual fact the budget for Foodpath would be $3,500,000 if a value was added of as little as $2,00 per pound for the food that is processed through our warehouse each year. We look forward to continuing to improve on our programs and increasing in our efficiency in processing the food that we retrieve. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future. If you have any questions about our operation
