RUNAWAY PREVENTION PROGRAM:
Every year, our outreach worker speaks to over 4,000 Peel youth in secondary school classrooms, community centres and other meeting places. The message is clear - don’t panic and run. Using a multi-media presentation that includes a video, role-play, quizzes and question and answer sessions, the outreach worker talks to teens about what real life on the street is like and hard it is to survive. She addresses alternatives to running and informs youth about resources available in their own community.

If you would like to arrange a presentation for your school or youth group, give us a call at (905) 238-1383 and ask for the outreach worker.

HISTORY:
In 1985 Our Place (Peel) opened the doors of Our Place I, a long-term residential program that teaches kids who can not live at home, the skills they need to live as independent young adults - skills like budgeting, grocery shopping, and getting along with others.

Four years later, Our Place II, Peel Region's only emergency youth shelter was opened. Centrally located, Our Place II provides food, safe shelter, counselling, support and referrals for youth in crisis.

Our Place (Peel) has one aim - to keep our kids in their own community, away from the downtown Toronto streets and the drugs, violence, and prostitution that are a part of downtown street life.

More than half the youth who come to us for help every year have been abused. Most (over 90%) come from broken homes and many seek our help because of serious parent/teen conflict. Secondary schools in Peel Region refer more young people to our programs than any other source.

FUNDING:
Funding for Our Place (Peel) is provided by the United Way, the Province of Ontario, the Region of Peel, and by donations from individuals and groups who want to help kids in crisis. Volunteers and staff also organize fundraising events such as the 8 Km. Run for Shelter held each year on the last Sunday of April.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
1. DONATIONS:

Our Pace (Peel) is a registered charity with Revenue Canada and will issue charitable receipts for income tax purposes for donations over $10. We are committed keeping our kids in their own community, away from the downtown Toronto streets and the violence, drugs and prostitution that are so often a part of street life - but we can't do it alone. We need help from individuals, groups and corporations who care about kids.

Financial support is one way you can help. Making a donation of toiletries, food, paper products and/or other supplies is another. On an ongoing basis, we need: deodorant, shampoo, bathroom tissue, facial tissue, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, peanut butter, jam, pasta, pasta sauce, and cereal. For more information give us a call at (905) 238-1383.

2. VOLUNTEERING

There are a number of volunteering experiences available at Our Place. Volunteers answer crisis calls from youth needing shelter; they lead recreational activities and; they assist with life skills training. Some volunteers participate in committees that help Our Place with organizational or policy issues, others are members of the Board of Directors and still others assist with fundraising activities like twice monthly bingo’s and the annual 8 Km. Run For Shelter. Full training is provided.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, be willing to commit at least 6 hours per month of their time to Our Place and participate in the training program. For more information about volunteering at Our Place (Peel), and/or to receive a volunteer application form, give us a call at (905) 238-1383.
