What Is The Host Program?
Every day people come to Canada seeking a new and better way of life. They come with valuable work skills, but find it hard to get a job and adjust because they speak a different language or they are not familiar with our society.
In 1992 the Peel/Halton Host Program began serving newcomers in the regions of Peel and Halton. Our program is one of the 25 Host Programs that extends across Canada. The aim is to help newcomers settle and integrate quickly into Canada by matching them with volunteer 'hosts'.
The Host Program offers a unique volunteer opportunity whereby resident Canadians can show new immigrants what it means to be a "Canadian".
Volunteer Hosts
Volunteer 'hosts' are people who have an enthusiasm for learning about other cultures, are interested in making new friends, and who want to help someone adjust to life in Canada. With the assistance and understanding of volunteers like you, the Host Program makes a new country feel like home to a newcomer.
Host Program volunteers and newcomers spend 2-3
hours per week work, ing on a slew of activities.
They can...
- practice English
- Share experiences
- learn about Canadian life and other cultures
- locate information on housing, employment, education etc.
- or simply form friendships
