VERY IMPORTANT!! What is the link between LD and the Census? In the last Census, very few Canadians with LD identified themselves as disabled. Therefore, according to official Canadian data sources, the number of reported Canadians with LD is negligible if not insignificant! These data sources are the ammunition used by all levels of government to increase, or more to the point, cut special needs programs. The article on page 14 of the Winter 2001 National newsletter Count Yourself In! explains how you can help. The article describes how after the May 2001 Census, Statistics Canada will move forward with the Health and Activity Limitation Survey (HALS). The HALS is the data source government officials use as a reference on disabilities including LD. It provides data on education, employment, health, etc. The challenge is getting Canadians with LD to identify themselves in the May 2001 Census in order to be counted in the HALS. Please call 791-4100 to get more information on the two key filter questions on disabilities that will be included on the May 2001 Census and how to respond to them. |
LDAO Working Definition of Learning Disabilities Learning disabilities can affect the way in which a person takes in, remembers, understands and expresses information. People with learning disabilities are intelligent and have abilities to learn despite difficulties in processing information. Living with a learning disability can have an ongoing impact on friendships, school, work, self-esteem and daily life. People with learning disabilities can succeed when solid coping skills and strategies are developed. |
